Why Surrender Feels Like Dying And What Holy Week Teaches Your Nervous System

Brigid Tebaldi·Mar 31, 2026· 2 minutes

You know what you need to let go of. You've prayed about it. You've journaled about it. You've said "not my will, but Yours" more times than you can count.

GAH it's so hard to do His will and not your own will.

Your nervous system is wired to survive above everything else and to your body, surrender feels like a threat. Letting go of control, sitting in uncertainty, releasing an identity you've held for years and it all registers the same way danger does. Your stress response fires and you tighten your grip. Then, you wonder what's wrong with you.

Nothing is wrong with you, but something does need to die.

Holy Week is not just history we observe from a safe distance. It is an invitation into the very thing our nervous systems resist most.

Five days. Five questions your soul needs this season.

From Palm Sunday to Easter, Holy Week walks us through the full arc of what transformation actually costs.

Palm Sunday asks where you're praising God with strings attached, hoping He'll save you in the specific way you're expecting.

Holy Thursday asks what your Gethsemane is and what God is inviting you to surrender even when everything in your body is screaming for another way.

Good Friday asks what part of your old self needs to be crucified with Christ. The fear. The false identity. The self-protection you've been carrying so long you forgot it isn't really you.

Holy Saturday is the day nobody talks about and asks if you can stay in the silence of the tomb without running, numbing, or forcing a resurrection on your own timeline.

Easter Sunday asks who you are now. If the tomb is empty, the old version doesn't get to come with you. So who is the woman God is raising?

The science and the Scripture are saying the same thing.

What the Cross asks of us - dying to the survival self, sitting in the unknown, trusting what we cannot see - goes against every instinct our nervous systems have. This is not a design flaw. It is the exact tension God works through.

Transformation does not happen despite the resistance. It happens inside it.
